Kinesis investigates sonic expression and transformation through gesture. In this interactive electroacoustic work, a Kinect depth and motion sensing device is used to track physical motion and gestures, information which is then mapped to various aspects of sound. For more precise control, sound events are selected and layered with a TouchOSC-enabled iPhone. In this way the left hand can trigger specific events and shape sonic textures while broader motion of the right hand adds expression, filtering and spatialization. As well, random events can be triggered by sudden movements of the left hand and torso.
This approach to interpretation opens up an ‘intangible’ performance practice that is ergonomic, idiomatic and completely adaptable. The composition process and performance practice are closely entwined with the resulting musical work evolving out of the free experimentation and exploration of movement and sound.
